Services for Leone S. Gakey, a retired transportation officer, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Evergreen Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Paul Birner of Anchorage Lutheran Church officiating. A visitation will be held at Evergreen Chapel Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. Born in Ritzville, Wash., Mrs. Gakey died July 4 at Our Lady of Compassion Care Center. She had lived in Alaska for the past 25 years, 20 years as a resident of Alexander Creek. She was the first female transportation officer in the military, starting a 28 year career in 1942, where she was employed receiving World War II soldiers on their return to the United States. She was a transportation officer at Fort Richardson. She retired in 1965, then was a transportation officer for health services at Alaska Native Medical Center, until she retired in 1970. A flower gardening enthusiast, she loved animals. She leaves her husband, Jack, of Alexander Creek; her son, Eldon "Don" Tanner, of Anchorage; her daughter, Carolee Kinsey of Portland, Ore.; two brothers, Fred Stroh of Gig Harbor, Wash., and Solly Stroh of Bremerton, Wash.; five grandchildren, and seven greatgrandchildren. Pall bearers will be Tom Labno, Don Maynick, Bob Nessler, Tim Eckstrom and Larry Genkowski. Burial will be at Fort Richardson National Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the Alaska Heart Association, 2330 E. 42nd. Ave., Anchorage, 99504. Arrangements by Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
