The funeral service will be held at 2 pm, Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at Sardis Primitive Baptist Church (2013 Sardis Church Road, Madison, NC 27025) with Elder Bill Knight and Elder David Minter officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Mr. Bennett was born May 4, 1915, in Rockingham County, to the late William Moore Bennett and Elmina Shields Bennett. He was a retired farmer and civic leader in the county. Living on the Bennett farm, in the family since 1859, Mr. Bennett spent long hours during the spring, summer, and fall planting, harvesting and preparing the principal crop of flue-cured tobacco for market. He also ran a dairy farm. Even among all the hard work, he was able to find many hours to discuss issues facing his beloved Democrat party and Rockingham County.
As a civic leader, Mr. Bennett was a member of the Board of Directors of First Citizens Bank in Madison, a member of the Rockingham Board of Elections, the Rockingham Industrial Facilities and Pollution Control Financing Authority and the N.C. Department of Transportation Efficiency Council. He also served as a Vice President of Farmer's Mutual Fire Insurance Company in Reidsville. For more than 30 years, Mr. Bennett served as a member of the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Committee and was chairman part of that time. In addition he was on the school board for Bethany High School for several years and a Trustee for Sardis Primitive Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Annie Butler Bennett (May 24, 2009), his sisters, Lois Knight, Annie Joyce, and brother Howard.
Survivors include sons, Bert Bennett and wife, Betty, of North Myrtle Beach, SC and Boyd Bennett and wife, Ann, of Raleigh; four grandchildren, Michael Bennett and wife, Hollie, Lori Bennett, David Bennett and Rachel Bennett; and sister, Iva McCollum, of Fairmont.
