Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Although he came from a military family, he was trained for the mercantile business. In spite of that, at the age of 23, he enlisted in the 1st United States Dragoons in February of 1834 in response to a perceived Indian threat on the frontier, and participated in an expedition through northern Iowa in 1835 to settle Indian unrest. With the resumption of relative peace in 1837, he was discharged from the service, and resumed his mercantile career in Fort Madison, Iowa. When the Civil War began, he raised a company which was included in the 7th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. Seriously wounded in the February 1862 Battle of Belmont, Missouri, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel of his regiment. Subsequently, he commanded the 7th Iowa in the battles of Fort Donelson, Shiloh, and Corinth. He would go on to command a brigade in the campaigns of the Army of the Tennessee under Generals Ulysses S. Grant, William T. Sherman, and Andrew J. Smith, and participated in the battles on Sherman's March to the Sea. At the end of the war, he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers "for gallant and meritorious services at the battles of Belmont, Missouri; Forts Henry and Donelson, and Shiloh, Tennessee; Corinth and Iuka, Mississippi; in the Atlanta campaign; the march to the sea, and through the Carolinas, and for faithful services during the war." After the war, he served as postmaster of Keokuk, Iowa for ten years.
