Organist and hymn writer. His early profession was law, before pursuing a career in music and reiving a degree from the Archbishop of Canterbury. The first person to do so in over two hundred years. He was organist in a number of churches and his research did much to improve the range of the instrument. In 1852, he took out a patent for electric action. He wrote ove a thousand hymns and composed the music for "Once in Royal David's City".
