Peter Little was the eldest of seven children birth to Capt. Daniel Little (1731-1775) and his wife Anna Marie Lewis. His father, born Johann Daniel Klein, was a German Lutheran who immigrated the Palatinate ca. 1750, passing through Pennsylvania before settling in Rowan Co., in the western Piedmont of North Carolina. By trade Daniel Little was a tanner and innkeeper.

According Betty Hunter, a historian of the Little Family:
As a young man, Peter [Little] was a planter and also a tanner. He was active in public affairs. He served in the Colonial Militia, rising to the rank of Captain. He was both a Constable and a Justice of the Peace in Rowan and Lincoln Counties.

During the Revolutionary War, he fought in the Battle of Camden under General Horatio Gates. He is listed as a Revolutionary Soldier on Page 112 in North Carolina Revolutionary Soldiers, Sailors, Patriots and Descendants, Volume II, compiled by Joseph T. Maddox and Mary Carter. The Battlefield at Camden has been described as the most disastrous for the Americans in the Revolutionary War.... Our Peter Little, Senior and his brother Daniel Little, Junior, were fortunate to return home from such a treacherous battle. According to oral family history, two of his brothers, John and Henry Little[,] were killed in this battle. Peter also fought in the Battle of G[u]ilford Court House....

Sometime around the turn of the century, [Peter and his family] moved to Lincoln County, North Carolina and settled in the northern part of the county. This was an area settled by German immigrants, many of whom were Lutheran. Peter and Christina joined the congregation of St. John's Lutheran Church which had been established in 1798....

Apparently Peter Little, Senior had a lingering bout with bad health and was possibly bed ridden for two and a half years since he made no new will. Peter Little, Junior died two years before Peter Little, Sr. At the time of his son's death, Peter, senior became the guardian of his grandchildren.

In 1778 Peter married Christina Agner, the daughter of Heinrich Eigener. (The family name has various spellings in the records). Only two sons are known: Peter Jr. (b. 1779) and Jacob (b.1783)
