Born in Bohemia, immigrated to the United States in 1881. Husband of Rose (married in 19880), father of Emma (Niemann), Mary, Tillie, Rose, Ella, Bertha and Jerry. Prominent milk dealer in Chicago, allegedly poisoned by arsenic at the hands of Bohemian hypnotist Herman Billick and Martin's wife Rose. In 1905 and 1906 Martin's children Mary, Tillie, Rose and Ella also died of poisoning. Rather than face increasing suspicions by the police, Martin's wife committed suicide in 1906. Jerry Vrzal testified against Billick, but later recanted his testimony as coerced by the police. Billick was convicted five times to be executed, but was pardoned and paroled in 1917. Emma Niemann's husband also died of symptoms simliar to those caused by poisoning, which briefly caused Emma to be considered a suspect in the posioning of her family.
