On November 23, 1914 the M/S Hanalei ran aground, in heavy fog, at 11:40am on the Duxburry Reef approximately 16 miles north of San Francisco, Bolinas Point. Of the 66 passengers and crew on board, Mary Cottrell was one of the 23 persons who did not survive.
