Alton W. Baker Funeral Held At N. Columbia

Funeral services for Alton Wiley Baker, 49, were held from the North Columbia Baptist Church at 11 o'clock Wednesday morning with the pastor, Rev. John R. Eubanks, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Coulter, pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church.
Interment was in Columbia Cemetery under the direction of Colonial Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Jesse Ball, Mack Simmons, Reggie Stamps, Homer Pope, Willie Mack Williamson, Louis Fortenberry, J. C. Burrow and J. C. McDaniel.
Mr. Baker, well-known local resident, died unexpectedly at 4:30 Monday afternoon while gathering sugar cane north of Columbia, his death coming as a sad shock to his family and many friends.
He was reared in Jefferson Davis and Marion Counties having been born in the former county August 7, 1906, the son of A. L. and Ella Bass Baker. He had been a resident of Columbia for more than twenty years and was a former employee of C. S. Jordan Wholesale Co. and Dorgan Packing Company. For the past five years he had been engaged in transfer and freight hauling business. With his family he made his home at 1209 Barnes Avenue. He was a member of the North Columbia Baptist Church.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Maurine Houston Baker; two daughters, Rose Inez and Paula Ann Baker of Columbia; two sons, Sfc. Alton W. Baker, Jr., stationed in Korea with the U.S. Army, and Austin Lee Baker of Columbia; his mother, Mrs. Ella Baker of Bassfield; three sisters, Mrs. J. C. Tullos of Columbia, Mrs. John B. Rankin of Gulfport and Mrs. Herbert Tidewell of Dallas, Texas; and one brother, J. C. Baker, of North Little Rock, Ark.
