Maxine McFarland West, 94, died in the Jasper County Nursing Home at 3:30 a.m., Dec. 19, 2003. Visitation will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Colonial Funeral Home in Bay Springs. Services will be at Bay Springs Presbyterian Church at 3 p.m. and burial in Bay Springs Cemetery. Maxine, born in Bay Springs, was the wife of the late Pastor T. Barton West. She enjoyed a full life, working as a school teacher, a supervisor at Ingalls Shipbuilding Corporation during World War II, an agent of Jasper County Welfare Department, and a social services director for Jasper County Nursing Home. She was an active member of the Bay Springs Presbyterian Church where she served as the church pianist for 40 years, youth advisor, and an officer in the Women of the Church. She is survived by a son, Alexander L. West, and his wife, Carolyn of Decatur, Ala., a daughter, Mary West Farris of Baton Rouge, La.; five grandchildren, Lockhard Farris, Thomas Barton West II, Shannan Kinchen, Mandy Schof, and McMillan West Doherty; two great-granddaughters, a brother, R. H. McFarland and wife, Susan, and a sister, Mary McFarland McInnis. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Maxine McFarland West Memorial Fund, Bay Springs Presbyterian Church.
