Born in Washingtonville and a graduate of Chester High School, he received his degree in Electrical Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1931. He received his Master of Arts degree at Columbia University. A teacher before entering the service, he had taught at Salisbury Mills and Roslyn, L.I., NY. When war was declared he entered the employment of Grumman Airplane Corporation where he taught student fliers kinematics and aero-mathematics.

As a Navy lieutenant, he was stationed at Oak Ridge, TN on April 8, 1944 where he was attached to a Naval unit assigned to work with Uranium 235, used in the manufacture of the Atom Bomb. After V-J Day, he was in charge of dismantling and disposing of surplus equipment.
