Edward Cassat studied at Haverford College, Ecole speciale militaire de Saint-Cyr, France then graduated from West Point in 1893. He served with the United States Cavalry in the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War. He was appointed military attaché at the United States Embassy in London, England.

He inherited Chesterbrook Farm in Berwyn, Pennsylvania where he engaged in the breeding of Thoroughbred horses for racing. His colt, Layminster, won the 1910 Preakness Stakes.
