Jacob Michels was one of 13 children born to Frederick A. Michaels and Mary "Polly" Bowman. He married Mary Holmes on the 4th of July, 1839 in Bradley, Co. TN. They had five known children: Margaretta Jane who married two of the Ricketts boys -- Rial and Pleasant Green, Frederick A., Wiliam J. who may have married Isabel Burbridge, Martha Sarah Elizabeth who married William Jasper Gillett, and Anna Michaels who married Thomas Seaton. Jacob and Mary moved their family from TN to McDonough Co. IL ca. 1844. On Sept. 1, 1862, Jacob enlisted at Quincy IL in Co. C 78th Illinois Volunteer Regiment, at the age of 43. He died at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. In his letter to the widow, Jacob's commanding officer George Blandin said, "Enclosed I send to you a small book and all the money he had on hand also a lock of his hair..."
