Thomas-8 was the son of Rebecca-7 Warner and her husband John McWhinney. They came from upstate New York and settled in Oakland County, Michigan in 1833 or 1835.

His heirs were his mother (not named), and brothers and sisters: William R., David and Andrew McWhinney, Mary Jane Downey, Rosey Ann and Eveline McWhinney, Thomas McWhinney (grandfather) and Olive McWhinney. Thomas had property in Highland Township, Holly, Oakland, MI.
