228 HUGH 5 MOSHER (Gideon 4, Hugh 3, Daniel 2, Hugh1, [Ezekiel 0; these numbers indicate the generations between the original Hugh Mosher and Hugh the fifer ]; born Perry, Lake County, Ohio, 29 January 1819; died Brighton, Lorain County, Ohio, 15 August 1892. He married [in 1848] HESTER B. SMITH, born in New York 1829; died 1896.

He lived in Brighton continuously from 1850 to his death. An ardent fifer, he formed a martial band before the Civil War. He enlisted in the war on 25 October 1861 as a fifer major in Company H, 43rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry and served until he was dismissed for physical disability 04 September 1862. He continued his martial band and served as the model [for the fife-player] in Archibald M. Willard's famous painting "The Spirit of '76".

i. SARAH 6 born Brighton, Ohio, 14 May 1849; died Oberlin Ohio, 03 May 1895; married Brighton, Ohio, 05 July 1868 to WILLIAM B. McLAUGHLIN, born Royalton, Ohio, 25 March 1846; living in Oberlin, Ohio, in 1898.

ii. MARY 6 born 23 September 1850; died 16 January 1897; married 31 March 1875 HENRY LOVELAND.

iii. LAURA 6 born 03 October 1856; married 28 December 1881 THERON MERRILL

iv. MINNIE 6 born 02 September 1859; married 16 January 1879 HORACE ABBEY

v. NETTlE 6 born 06 July 1863; died 15 March 1875

vi. WALTER GIDEON 6 born 07 May 1866; died 19 December 1937; married 15 October 1894 CORA YOCUM.

vii. FANNIE 6 born 07 January 1876; married 10 October 18?? HOMER VINCENT

His brother Marvin was a Private Co. H 43rd Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry. His parents might be Gideon and Sarah who moved from New York to Ohio in the early 1800s.
