Darwin L. Crisman, age 90, of Templeton, PA passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 31, 2012 at the Armstrong County Memorial Hospital.

He was born on January 4, 1922 in Reynoldsville, PA, the son of Luke and Margaret (Leech) Crisman.

He grew up on the family farm near Widnoon, studied for eight years with his father and schoolmaster Luke Crisman at the one-room Hawkville School, and attended Rimersburg High School. He honorably served in the US Army Air Corps from 1942-1945. Stationed in England at Deenethorpe Airfield, Crisman was Master Sergeant and Crew Chief for the B-17 aircraft "Diana Queen of the Chase" in the 401st Bomb Group. He was awarded the Bronze Star for heroism.

Darwin married Lula Maxine (Swartz) Crisman August 18, 1945 in Jackson, Mississippi. They operated Crisman Motor Service near Widnoon from 1947-1966. Darwin also worked as a carpenter, millwright, and flight instructor. From 1966-1984 he lived with his family in Hermitage, PA and worked as plant manager and chief mechanic for Liquid Air Corp. at the Sharon Steel mill. During his active retirement he and his wife Lula traveled around the country for twenty winters in their motor home. Since Lula's passing in 2005, he spent winters with his daughter Phoebe Crisman and family in Charlottesville, VA and with his niece Flora Bish and her husband in Frogtown.

Darwin Crisman was an accomplished mechanic, pilot, motorcyclist, avid traveler, and devoted father. He was a member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, the New Bethlehem Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons, and the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America.

He is survived by his daughter Phoebe Crisman and husband Michael Petrus of Charlottesville, Virginia; grandson Alexander Petrus Crisman; special niece Flora (Walter) Bish and husband Bob of Frogtown; two brothers, W. Warren Crissman and wife Allene and Joseph P. Crisman and wife Elva, all of Hawkville; and sister Mildred Bole and husband Ronald of Rimersburg.

Darwin was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 60 years, Lula Maxine (Swartz) Crisman; his son Darwin Luke Crisman, and brother James Crisman.

Friends and family will be received from 12PM until the time of the memorial service at 1PM on Sunday, June 3, 2012 at the Bauer-Hillis Funeral Home, 758 Main Street, Rimersburg with the Reverend Keith Dovenspike officiating. Full military honors will immediately follow presented by the Rimersburg American Legion Post 454 and the VFW Post 7132.

Burial will be at the Duncan Cemetery, Madison Twp., Armstrong County, alongside his wife and son.
