Funeral services for Ray E. Rieke of 239 Charmony Place will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from Christ United Methodist, Rev. Keith Watson officiating.
Burial will follow in Riverside cemetery.
Mr. Rieke, who served 15 years as a Logan County Commissioner, died Tuesday in a Sterling nursing home. He was 90.
His political career began in 1932 and came to a climax in 1968, during which time he served as a member of the Logan County Board of Coun ty Commissioners 1933-1940 and 1960-1968.
He defeated S.A. Richardson in 1932 and remained a member of the commissioners until T.J. Crichton defeated him in the 1940 election.
Ten years later, Mr. Rieke made his only bid for a state political office the Democratic candidate for the Colorado House Of Representatives.
He ran up against one of the strongest vote getters in Logan County and was defeated by Republican David A. Hamil, who was returned to the Colorado House after a two years absence.
Undaunted, Mr. Rieke returned to the political wars in 1960 and was elected to the board of county commissioners defeating Republican incumbent H.E. "Hap" Williams.
Mr. Rieke completed his political service to Logan County in 1968 after announcing his decision not to seek re-election and was succeeded by Republican George Korrey.
When first elected as a county commissioner, in 1932, Mr. Rieke was the youngest person to be chosen to the office. When he ran in the 1960 election he was the oldest commissioner candidate to be successful.
He was born Nov. 24, 1890 in Kenesaw Valley, now known as West Plains, Logan County, the son of Frederick W. and Emma L. Currier Rieke. He received his education in Logan County schools and took an agriculture course at Colorado A&M (Now CSU), setting the pattern for his longtime work as a farmer and rancher in Logan County.
His interest in agriculture and the livestock industry stirred his desires for a better county and prompted him to make extensive studies of state water and irrigation problems, as well as pressing the importance of the family type farm.
He was among the original 4-H Club members in the county and maintained a keen interest in the work of yough people of the region.
Mr. Rieke served for over 20 years as Sunday School superintendent of the Padroni Church and was active in church projects.
He also served on the Padroni school board for nine years and had a major interest in schools and education in the area as well as the state.
A veteran of world War I, Mr. Rieke served in France with the U.S. Army Signal Corps.
He married Esther Schmidt May 16, 1918. She died April 28, 1976.
Mr. Rieke was a member of the Christ United Methodist
Church, the Sterling American Legion Post No. 20, Last Squad and the Gideon Organization.He also served on the
Overland Trail Museum Board and was active in the projects of the Logan County Historical Society.
Mr. Rieke is survived by three daughters, Mrs Clella Best of Fort Morgan, Miss Ardith Rieke of Aurora and Mrs. Jennevieve Wether ington of Bartlesville, Okla.; a sister, Mrs. Pearl Haller of Arvada; and eight grand children.
