The deceased was a young man of exceptional moral and religious character, and of great promise. He was among the first to volunteer in defense of the invaded rights and liberties of his country, and as a patriot and soldier did his whole duty at Ball's Bluff, at the battle of Fair Oaks, and in all the engagements on the retreat of the army from and before Richmond. Funeral services were held here by Elder J Hawker, when the house was filled with his numerous relatives and friends, and the entire circle of his sorrowing youthful companions for many miles around. O, what a legacy of sorrow and suffering has the unhallowed and reckless ambition of a few wicked, designing men, brought upon the youth and manhood of our country.
