Sion Darnell was a voice for the southerners who served in the Union Army during the Civil War. He wrote and spoke of the 1st Georgia Infantry, a group of Georgia men who fought for the Union. These men are sometimes referred to as the "Forgotten Union Guerrillas of the North Georgia Mountains." Many of them deserted the Confederate Army, not supporting the cause. Several of these men were executed.

Darnell, along with several of the men who were executed, are buried at the Marietta National Cemetery, recognized for their service to the United States.

Sion A. Darnell died at his home in Atlanta after an illness of two weeks. Surviving are his wife, one son, Sion A. Darnell Jr. and one daughter, Mrs. W.A. Jones of Jasper. He was born in Jasper, Pickens County, Ga., December 28, 1845 and served in the Federal army during the Civil War. He remained in Jasper until moving to Atlanta a few years ago. (Page 4 Col 6)
