William was the second child of Darius Smith Hartman and Eliza Ann Robinson. He married Mary Jane McRae 23 Sept. 1888, in Simcoe, Ontario. About 1894 they migrated to St. Clair County, Michigan, where his parents and siblings had settled. William's main occupation was a farmer. He made his home in Port Huron 20 years prior to his death. He and Mary Jane had seven children: Stella, George, Margaret, Katherine, Angus, John and James.

"William H. Hartman, 93, formerly of St. Clair, resident of Port Huron 25 years, died today in the home of his daughter Mrs. William Zimmer. He was born April 17, 1862, in Bath, Ontario. His wife, Mrs Mary Jane Hartman, died February 16, 1950. He is survived by two daughters: Mrs. Zimmer, Port Huron, & Mrs. Leonard Rosenquist, Custer, Michigan; three sons, Leo Hartman of Los Angeles, John of Pelston and James Port Huron; 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 9 great great grandchildren."
