Funeral services for Joseph William Oller of Knoxville were held on Friday, July 17, at the First United Methodist Church in Knoxville with Rev. Art Hill officiating. Burial followed in Graceland Cemetery with military honors accorded by the United States Army, the American Legion Baty-Tucker Post No. 168 & the V.F.W. John Myers Post No. 3519.

Music was provide by Geof Schultz & Scott Smith, selections included, “how Great Thou Art”, “The Lord’s Prayer”, “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot”, “Dancing in the Dark” and “Sentimental Journey”. Those serving as casket bearers were, Gordon Kassel, Harold Wright, James Schaffer, Chuck Day, Joseph Heun and Ross Brosemer. Honorary casket bearers included, Ken Howard, Dan McKay, Bob Foster, Dr. Richard McKay, Dr. frank Peak and Dr. Earl J McKeever.

Joseph William Oller was born on April 16, 1919, in Des Moines, to John and Susan (Hodges) Oller. He received his education in Creston, Iowa after which he was employed by the National Bank in Creston.

He married Mary Schaffer on June 1, 1941 and they moved to California where he was advanced to a position with the Bank of America.

Due to the war, Joe enlisted in the Army to become an officer in October 1942. Finishing training, he was badly wounded and airlifted to the Army hospital in the state of Washington for a slow recovery.

After his recovery, he joined his wife, Mary, who was teaching in the Knoxville Schools in June 1946. They remained in Knoxville where he became occupied with taxes and eventually a position as a Business Manager in the school system until his retirement.

In his spare time, Joe would take friends to doctor appointments in Des Moines and deliver meals-on-wheels. Through the years, he also held leadership roles in the community, the Methodist Church and was past-president of the Pine Knolls Country Club Board of Directors. Joe and Mary also enjoyed many wonderful trips. His greatest joy was found spending time with his family, whom he adored.

He was a hero, a kind father, loving husband, as well as a faithful member of the United Methodist Church.

Joe passed away on Tuesday, July 14, 2009, at the Knoxville Hospital at the age of 90.

Those preceding him in death were his parents, four sisters, one brother, one sister-in-law, three nephews, and two nieces.

Survivors include his wife, Mary, daughters Susan Heun of Des Moines and Nancy Brosemer (Roger) of Seattle, Washington, two grandsons: Joseph Heun and Ross Brosemer, along with many nephews, nieces and friends.
