Charles Henry Darden is this contributor's great-great-great grandfather.

Charles was married twice. His first wife was Nancy Seeds, by whom he had 7 children, namely Harriet Ann Darden, Julius Caesar Darden, William Anslum Darden, Charles Henry Darden, Sarah Anne Darden, Evilena Darden and Osceola (Oceolia/Oceola) Darden. Nancy died sometime after the 1850 census and by the 1860 census, Charles had married Martha Ann Stephenson. Charles and Martha had 7 children, namely Euphronia Nancy Darden, Charles Wilbon Darden, David Franklin Darden, Julia Jackson Darden, Nancy Catherine Darden, John Morgan Darden and Alfred Edward Darden.

Charles built a home in 1850-52 that stands, and is occupied as of 2009. The family cemetery is just steps away from this home and contains only two known burials, that of Charles and A. F. Darden, whom we believe to actually be Charles' brother Alfred T. Darden.

On September 23, 1877, Charles' estate was appraised. The inventory was found in Will Book 30, age 723, 24 and 25, Isle of Wight County, Virginia. The inventory included items such as, 12 old chairs, valued at $3.00; several bedroom sets, one is valued at $25.00; a safe in the basement, valued at $5.00; 1 brass kettle, valued at 50 cents; 60 chickens, valued at $10.00; 1 sow and pigs, valued at $6.00; 1 corn sheller, valued at $2.50; 1 ox, valued at $20.00; 3 cows, valued at $10.00 each and more. The total value of the estate was $617.80, which was assigned to "Mrs. Martha A. Darden and infant children as homestead."
