Arthur Godfrey Peuchen was a survivor of the Titanic disaster. At the time he was known as Major Peuchen. He offered to assist in rowing one of the lifeboats when its passengers discovered that they only had one seaman. The ship's Second Officer told him he could go if he could get down the falls into the lifeboat. This he did (he was an experienced yachtsman) so he became one of the few men to survive the disaster. He subsequently testified at the New York hearings into the disaster and he was also villified by the public (as were almost all other male survivors) just because he was a man who had survived.
