Author, journalist and publisher, Frank Harris was born in the west of Ireland of Welsh parents and emigrated to the United States at the age of 14. His own life was also the stuff of novels. In the United States, he was groom, hotelier and cowboy before being attracted to literature. Returning to England, he edited a literary review and published two magazines. While editing newspapers and magazines, he wrote his four-volume autobiography, My Life and Loves, which was banned by censors in the USA and Britain because of its sexual frankness. As editor of the Saturday Review he was an early publisher of George Bernard Shaw and Oscar Wilde and wrote biographies of both.
Harris and Wilde were long-time friends – Wilde dedicated his play 'The Ideal Husband': 'to Frank Harris: a slight tribute to his power and distinction as an artist, his chivalry and nobility as a friend' – and Harris was one of the few who remained loyal to Wilde after his dramatic trial in 1895 and imprisonment in Reading Gaol, financing Wilde on his release until his death.
A committed Francophile for most of his life, with business interests in Monaco and Cannes, Harris moved permanently to Nice in 1922.
He married for the third time in 1927, aged 71, to the former Nellie O'Hara, 31 years his junior, and died on 26 August 1931. Nellie survived him by 24 more years. They are both buried in a modest grave in the Caucade cemetery in Nice, just inland from the western end of the promenade. The memorial plaque outside Harris's apartment building - 9, rue de la Buffa, Nice - reads, in translation: ‘Frank Harris, Irish journalist and writer and faithful guest of the Côte d'Azur, died in this house'.
