The Reverend Charles C. Spence was a Methodist Minister who was the founding President of Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia. He was the son of David Winchester Spence and Sophia C. Turner.

Reverend Spence was a Civil War veteran having served in the 43rd Georgia Infantry. This regiment saw action at Chickasaw Bayou, Champions Hill and was captured when Vicksburg fell. After being paroled the unit saw action from Missionary Ridge to Nashville.

Piedmont College was chartred in 1897 as the J.S. Green Collegiate Institute. In 1901 the school was adopted by the American Missionary Association. A disastrous fire crippled the school in 1911; but in spite of the backset Pres. Spence and friends of the school applied themselves with intensified zeal to the work of rehabilitation. Rev. Spence cashed in his own life insurance policy to help support the school.

Today, through the vision of Pres. Spence and others, Piedmont College is a classic, independant, church related, liberal arts institution. With a large endowment Piedmont is able to provide a high quality education while maintaining tuition that is among the lowest of all private colleges in the state of Georgia.
