Christian Emil Neilson came to the Big Horn Basin in 1900, traveling by train as far as Bridger, Montana, which was the end of the railroad at that time. The family settled in the Cowley area and he worked on the railroads, ditches and roads in this end of the Big Horn Basin, and he also farmed. He did freighting and helped to bring in the materials used in the building of the Shoshone dam and the tunnels of the reclamation project. He and his wife, Ellamore, were well known for their beautiful flower gardens and were the first settlers to prove that tomatoes could be raised in the Big Horn Basin.
