James Houston Webb, aged 37 years, of Bedford, Ind., formerly of Cooter died Thursday July 12 of injuries received at an Asphalt Mixing Plant of the Rood Resurfacing Company of Bloomington, Ind.
Mr. Webb, employed as a laborer by the Bloomington Company, is reported to have been tightening teeth of the asphalt mixer when he became over balanced and in attempting to avoid a fall, caught hold of a clutch that set the machine in operation. His right foot was caught in the machine and torn off, his right leg was mangled almost to the hip and he suffered pelvic injuries.
He was rushed to the hospital where physicians found it necessary to amputate the leg near the hip. Loss of blood and shock are said to have been the cause of his death.
Funeral services were held Saturday July 14 at the Day and Carter Chapel with burial in the Beech Grove Cemetery.
Webb was the son of Mrs. Texas Webb of Cooter where he made his home before going to Indiana. He was united in marriage at Indianapolis to Miss Gertrude Shedelbourner on Sept. 20, 1924 and to this unit was born four children, all of whom with the widow, survive. The children are, Maurine 9 years old, James 6, Robert 4 and Thomas two months. He is survived by one brother Walter Webb of Cooter and three sisters, Mrs. Mary Barnett of here, Mrs. Thelbert Bishop of Steele and Mrs. Ruth Green of Indianapolis.
