Harvey Wood Hawver was the son of Jacob and Margaret Hawver of Otsego County, New York. He enlisted in the Union army on Aug. 4, 1862, in Cherry Valley, New York, as a Private in Company G, 121st New York Infantry. He was promoted to Corporal on May 15, 1865, and mustered out June 25, 1865, in Hall's Hill, Virginia.

He moved to San Francisco after the war and worked as a merchant. He died unexpectedly on Apr. 2, 1894, while staying at a hotel in Los Gatos, California. The cause of death was "neuralgia of the heart." (San Jose Mercury, Apr. 3, 1894, p.5.)

Harvey W. Hawver's remains were removed from the Los Gatos Cemetery and buried at Angelus Rosedale Cemetery on Feb. 14, 1897, per cemetery records. Although a veteran's headstone was ordered for delivery to Los Gatos Cemetery, he appears to have only a simple marker at Angeles Rosedale. The year of death on the marker, 1892, is incorrect.
