Sam was the son of Scott S. Evans and Ella L. Ewing Evans who resided in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. He was in the service for three years and one month at the time of his death and was decorated with the Purple Heart.

Prior to his enlistment in the US Army on 08 Jan 1941 "Sam" was employed by A & P Grocery Chain Store on Rehoboth Avenue, Rehoboth Beach, DE as a meat butcher.
He never married.

"After four years in the Army, Private, First Class, Samuel R. Evans, of Rehoboth Beach, was killed in action in Germany on February 11, 1945. Private Evans had gone overseas in April 1944, where he was wounded in the fighting, receiving fractures of both legs and spending seven months in the hospital. He was a member of Company F, 2nd Ba. Eighth Infantry".

Samuel Riley Evans died on the Roer River, West of Rhine River, Germany during the Battle of the Bulge.

Note: "Sam" was first buried in Belgium in 1945 and was returned to his family in the United States on 26 April 1949 and was reinterred in Epworth Methodist Cemetery.
