Opal was born and raised in Lincoln County, the daughter of Robert A. and Bertha Crenshaw. She graduated from Carrizozo High School, attended OU in Norman OK, ENMU at Portales and received a double major from UNM in Business and Education in 1942. She was on the college rodeo team at Eastern NM and earned some fame as a steer rider in the rodeos. She married Weston Mills and they travelled to many places during their lifetime- living in Venezuela, South Africa and Saudi Arabia.
