10th Indiana Governor, US Congressman, US Senator. He was elected to represent Indiana's 7th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1843 to 1845. In 1849 he was elected as the 10th Governor of Indiana, and served from December 5, 1849 to January 12, 1857. Between terms as United States Minister to Prussia, he served to represent Indiana in the United States Senate during the Civil War, serving from 1862 to 1863.
