US Congressman. Having received a limited education, he learned the trade of brickmaker in Monticello, Kentucky, at about the age of 15. He later studied law and was admitted to the bar. After serving in the Kentucky House of Representatives, he was elected as a Whig to Congress in 1834. He served three terms, from 1835 to 1841, declining to run for reelection in 1840. He later moved to California. Originally buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery in San Francisco, he was moved to Cypress Lawn Memorial Park in Colma when Laurel Hill was closed.
