Monterey County Constable Hardmount was shot and killed when he attempted to break up a fight between some Americans, Mexicans and Irish over rum. The suspect shot and killed Constable Hardmount when he attempted to stop the fight.

The suspects accomplice was wounded by a shot gun blast. The suspect who shot Constable Hardmount escaped, but his accomplice was arrested and hung the following day in the center of town.

Constable Hardmount is the first know peace officer to die in the line of duty in California. He is honored at the California State Peace Officer Memorial in Sacramento, CA, and the National Peace Officer Memorial in Washington, D.C., Panel E-25, Line 23.
