Dale Vernon Huntington, 88, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 18, 2005, at Bethany St. Joseph Care Center in La Crosse.

He was born to Frank "Ray" and Caspara (Hendrickson) Huntington on Nov. 24, 1916, in Barre Mills, Wis.

Dale lived a full and interesting life. From helping to build the dam on the Mississippi River at Genoa, to pulling locomotives out of the ground with teams of horses to sell the iron for scrap, to pulling blocks of ice out of the river and storing them in his ice shed — he had done it all.

Ella "Babe" Parrish must have thought Dale was something special because they met at a dance on a blind date and danced together for the next 59 years. All that dancing resulted in the births of four children, Debra, Jerry, Monte and Brenda.

Dale owned and operated Huntington's Garage in Genoa from the age of 21 until 1995. He always took pride in the fact that he had repeat customers from four states that would come to buy a boat or outboard from him. Out of his little shop in Genoa, he consistently outsold even the largest Chrysler dealerships in the state. Dale knew and dealt with thousands of people over the years and made an impression on most. Some thought he was always in trouble because of all the police cars sitting out front of the business, but they were just stopping by to say "Hi." Day or night, seven days a week, Dale could be counted on to get you some gas, pull your car out of the ditch or just talk about the fishing. He was an avid sportsman who loved his beagles who often traveled with him.

As a child of the Depression, he taught us all the value of work. As a husband, father and grandpa, he taught us the value of family. He will be forever missed.

He is survived by his wife, Ella "Babe"; their four children, Debra (Gary) Bolstad of Coon Valley, Wis., Jerry (Pam) Huntington of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., Monte (Pam) Huntington of Appleton, Wis. and Brenda (David) Rundahl of Coon Valley; 16 grandchildren, Andrea (Todd) Trocinski, Erik (Sue) Bolstad, Anne Bolstad, Aaron (Gail) Bolstad, Ethan (Debra) Bolstad, Adam Huntington, Mandi (Jason) Reiman, Rissa Huntington, Emily Huntington, Abby Huntington, Lexie Huntington, Jacob Huntington, Britt (Jeremy) Struemke, April (Ryan) Zuberbier, Beth Rundahl and Dale Rundahl; 11½ great-grandchildren; his brother, Gene Huntington; a very special niece and nephew, Rich and Sharon Davidson; and many other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister and brother-in-law, Hazel and Joe Ghelfi.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pastor Jonathan E. Rimmert will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse and from 10 a.m. until the time of services Wednesday at the church.
