James learned the art of stone cutting while working on railroad construction. He moved to Oregon in 1851. There he built the original " Mountain House" at the base of Mt. Ashland. He married Ann Haseltine Hill on 9 May 1854. They lived briefly in Yreka, then moved back to Jackson County and he built a marble mill near Phoenix, Oregon. After a brief time in the mines in Idaho they moved back to Ashland, Oregon on 14 April 1865 where he built a water powered marble mill on Ashland Creek. He is credited with creating the first marble monuments in Jackson, Josephine, Douglas, Klamath and Lake Counties as well as the first in Shasta County, California. He died in Ashland on 1 Oct 1895 from rheumatic problems probably caused by inhalation of marble dust over many years.

Peacefully folded his hands from their labors Just rest thy hands from the labors of life; Joyfully, lovingly living with Jesus There's rest for the spirit from turmoil and strife.
