On January 9, 1997, Grant Wendell Young, age 75, after a beautiful day surrounded by family moved on to a better playing field.


He was born on July 20, 1921 in Murray, Utah to Horace Sharp and Ella Pearl Erickson Young.


He married Venice Parker on January 29, 1942 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple, his eternal sweetheart said goodbye on January 19, 1992. A special brightness entered his life when he met and later married Ruth Keller on October 20, 1995. He is the father of six devoted children.


He loved his family and received great joy and pleasure from their activities and accomplishments. He was a graduate of Jordan High and attended the University of Utah.


He took great pride in serving his country during World War II. He had a love for the game of softball and played, umpired, and organized many softball events in the Salt Lake area.


He retired from the D & RGW Railroad as foreman of the "Big Hook" after 41 years of service. He enjoyed the children of the Salt Lake County, during his 13 years as a school crossing guard. He was an active member of the LDS Church, serving in many positions.


Survived by his wife Ruth; five sons and one daughter, Don and Joan, Roger and Trena, Rodney and Jean, Brian and Diane, Corrie and Cindy, all of Salt Lake City; Jan and Kendall Busk, Richfield; 21 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother and two sisters, Gene; Dorothy and Marjorie. Preceded in death by brothers, Sharp and Harold. Survived also by Ruth's family of one son and three daughters, Thomas and Sheryl Slater, Gail and Lonnie Yeaman, Patti and Alan Jensen, Sandra and James Brogdon; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.


Funeral Services will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday, January 14, 1997 in the Wasatch Lawn Mortuary Chapel, 3401 South Highland Drive (1495 East), where friends may call on Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. and on Tuesday from 10:45-11:45 a.m. prior to the services.
Interment: Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, Rosemont Section.
