DRYDEN--Earl J. Chaffee, 85, of 2 Chaffee Road, died Sunday, June 5, 1983, at the Cortland Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. He was born in Ithaca on Nov. 1, 1897, the son of the late John and Catherine Conklin Chaffee. A resident of Dryden since 1940, he was a farmer and had been employed as a maintenance man at Balch Halls, Cornell University, for 23 years, retiring July 1, 1963. He and his wife, Erma Powers Chaffee, celebrated their 66th anniversary on Jan. 24. In addition to his widow, Erma Powers Chaffee of Dryden; a son Clarence Chaffee of Springfield, Va.; two daughters, Mrs. Earl (Catherine) Butts of Dryden and Deborah Chaffee of Dryden; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and three great, great-grandchildren; a brother, John A. Chaffee of Geneva, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. A son, Earl A. Chaffee, was killed in action on March 31, 1945, in Germany; a daughter, Winifred Knapp, died in 1973; and a grandson, Harold Knapp, Jr. died in 1963. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Perkins Funeral Home, Dryden, with the Rev. Virgil Versteeg, Pastor of the Dryden Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Willow Glen Cemetery, Dryden. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Dryden Fire Department Ambulance Fund.
