Joseph was the seventh of nine children born to Rev. John Lewis Sr. and Elizabeth (Lewis) Foster. He married Sarah (Prather) in 1801 and they had eleven children: Ruth, Elizabeth, James Prather, Rebecca, Thomas Lewis, Mary, Joseph, John, Cassandra, Benjamin and Sarah.
