He was a farmer, salesman, and cement mill worker before he became self employed. Walter had a photograph gallery in a small town next to the post office where his future wife worked.
He and his wife (Carrie McDaniels) raised three girls and three boys.
Walter won a lot of ribbons on the chickens that he had raised. He also love horses and fishing.
Walter belong to the Methodist Church. He passed away on August 10, 1950 at the age of 74 years.
His nephew William Martin Smith paid him this tribute "I greatly admired him. He was an excellent salesman and an able business man. I doubt that he had more than a few grades in school, but his alertness and ability would put many a college graduate to shame."
