obit: Gordon Prater, 88, of Cowden, died at 3:35 a.m. Friday (March 13, 1987) in the Shelby Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the First Christian Church of Cowden by the Rev. Darrell Hinkle. Alene Cosart and Barbara Sarver were vocalists, accompanied by Sally Willis.
Pallbearers were Kenneth Toothman, Robert Prater, Greg Prater, Gary Prater, Jeff Prater, Jim Prater, Richard Crouch and Gary Huddleston.
Burial was in Mound Cemetery, Cowden. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church of Cowden. Arrangements were by Lockart and Sons Funeral Home of Cowden.
Mr. Prater was born Aug. 31, 1898 in Edinburg, the son of Thomas B. and Esther Ann Halford Prater. He was a retired farmer and member of the First Christian Church of Cowden.
He married Ina L Lockart Feb. 4, 1919 in Cowden, and she died April 20, 1986.
Surviving are sons, Everett of Odessa, Fla., Charles and Roy both of Cowden, and Dale of Decatur; daugher, Miriam Toothman of Decatur; sister Verna Phillips of Champaign; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Four brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.
