John was the second of four children of Charles E. Simpson and Dora Belle Ray. He born in Oregon and lived most of his life there. In 1930 he was living in rural Lane County with his wife Gladys and a young daughter and worked as a log truck driver. In 1942 he enlisted in the Army. He became a corporal.

John served in the Army in WWII and died in the Veterans Hospital in Vancouver, Washington.
