He was born to John Franklin and Margaret Ann (Rogers) McGee. He married Vera Morrison on Dec. 8, 1943, in Amarillo. He served the U.S. Army Air Corps, 8th Air Force, during World War II as a First Lieutenant flying a B-17 "Flying Fortress" Bomber in the liberation of Europe, specifically the "Battle of Normandy". During his campaigns in the war, he was awarded the "Distinguished Flying Cross", Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, and the European, African and Middle Eastern Service Medal with two Bronze Stars. He was involved in logistics for TWA Airlines. He was a career pilot for Long Bell Lumber Co., later to be known as International Paper. Leonard was a member of the Sherwood Shores Chapel. He enjoyed gardening and the outdoors.
