John Curry was born John Corrigan, son of Patrick Corrigan, Sr. and Rose Ann Folun. He later became the husband of Jane Garner.
John Corrigan changed his surname to 'Curry' after his marriage in 1830. Then he and his family emigrated to Canada in 1840. Curry was the grandfather of General Arthur William Currie. When he first arrived in Canada in 1840 he and his family lived for several months in Kerwood. Then in late 1840 they moved to a new home in Adelaide, Ontario (Lot 15, 5th concession). Upon his death he was eulogized as follows: "He was a most zealous and consistent (Methodist church) member to the end of his life. He possessed a wonderfully retentive memory, an indomitable will, and always had the courage of his convictions." He had a very large funeral procession and Arthur William Currie was one of his pallbearers.
From 'Strathroy Dispatch' newspaper obituary for John Curry posted at left in photo section by Ken Stephenson: "The Late Mr. John Currie...The subject of this notice was born in the County of Mayo, Ireland, in 1807, married Jane Gardner (sic) in 1830, immigrated to Canada in 1840, settled on lot 15, 5th con., Adelaide, the same year, where his son and grandson now live, and where he lived until his wife's demise, which took place in October, 1888, when he removed to the city of London, and lived with his daughter, Mrs. John Dawson, until his death. Mr. Currie had 13 children, nine away one before, and four survive. Deceased joined the Methodist church in 1842, of which he was a most zealous and consistent member to the end of his life. He possessed a wonderfully retentive memory, and indomitable will, and always had the courage of his convictions. He was always swayed, governed, imbued, sustained and strengthened by the eternal principles of right. Being a man of faith and prayer, he was always a welcome guest in the home of the afflicted, for he invariably took his stand beneath the shadow of the Cross, and with a smile or a tear he breathed all around him the usual aroma of Calvary..For many years he had been afflicted with kidney trouble, and on the 5th inst. he passed peacefully away, his dying words being those of Stephen, 'Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.' A very large funeral procession on Friday, 7th inst., conveyed the body to the fourth line cemetery, the pallbearers being his six grandsons...Written by a Friend."
