Orpah is the daughter of Joseph and Maria (McIntyre) Leonard who came to Mississippi from Springfield, Massachusetts in 1776 with a party led by Captain Matthew Phelps. Maria became ill and died at the end of the voyage just as they reached Natchez. Joseph and two of his sons were killed by Indians in 1778 near Natchez. (see book: Memoirs and Adventures of Capt.
