William Means Bowling made his homegoing departure on March 21, 2006.

He was born in Greenville, South Carolina, on Sept. 22, 1913. William Means Bowling was the son of the late Eugene Mills Bowling and Mrs. Ella Mae Burgess Bowling.

Means Bowling attended elementary and high school in Greenville County, and received his Bachelors of Science degree from South Carolina State College in Orangeburg, South Carolina, and continued studies at Furman University's Graduate School.

He was a lifelong educator with the Greenville County School District, where he taught many years at the Sullivan Elementary School.

William Means Bowling served in the U.S. Army, received 2 Bronze Stars, as a Staff Sergeant to 92nd Buffalo Division of Service Battery 597th Field Artillery Battalion.

He was a member and faithful servant of Allen Temple AME Church for 85 years. He served on the Lay Organization, the Sunshine Club and the Church Finance Committee. He also served as a church Steward.

He participated in many civic activities: the NAACP; past President of Club Esquire; former Basileus for the Phi Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.

William Means Bowling is the last surviving member of his immediate family. Means was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jenelle Brier Bowling; a daughter, Patricia Bowling, who died in infancy; his parents; three brothers, Timothy Mills Bowling, Eugene Burgess Bowling, and David F. Bowling; two sisters, Carrie Mae Bowling and Gwendolyn Bowling Lawton.

Left to mourn are his beloved daughter, Wilhelmena Elizabeth Bowling (Fletcher) Smith; two grandsons, Fletcher Nathaniel Smith III, and William Louis Smith of Greenville, South Carolina.

Funeral Service: Noon Monday at Allen Temple AME Church, with burial in Greenville Memorial Gardens.

The family is at 102 Staunton Court, Greenville.
