John Alfred Winborg was born in Malmo Sweden, the son of Goran Persson and Anna Palsson Winborg. Converts to the LDS Church, John and his brother, George, came to Millville in 1888 and began saving money to send for their mother and other family members. After his arrival here, John changed his name to Winberg.

On April 16, 1891, he married Josephine Sorenson in the Logan Temple. She was born January 8, 1870, in Millville, Utah, the daughter of Nils and Sissa Nielson Sorenson.

John bought a small acreage on which he raised fruits and vegetables to feed his growing family. He had learned the blacksmith trade from his father and built a shop close to his home. People came from long distances to have him sharpen their plowshares. Their home was busy, with friends coming and going.

Josephine was always busy. She did her own wallpapering, including the ceilings. She was a caring woman who always had time to help those in need. In addition to helping their children, she and John took care of their aged parents in later years.

They were parents of: Hilda (Charles Checketts), Hazel (Isaac Loveday), Parley (Esther Anderson), Segrie (Ernest Carlson), Wilford (LaVon Watson), Rosella (William L. King), Chauncy, Elsie (Ross Hancey) and Nina (Francis L. Bodrero).
