Letter from Mary Bell Millar (Wm Stirling's first cousin, daughter of James Bell, Elizabeth Bell Stirling's brother) from Forfar Scotland dated June 20, 1898. This letter has genealogy information.
Charles St, Forfar
June 20, 1898
My Dear Cousin,
Having received yours this week I am now to try and answer it . It appeared to me to be as a voice from the dead but we were all very glad to hear from you. My father got quite excited over it. You would know a great change in Forfar, I am sure, and if you thought you would be able to come over we would all be as glad to see you as you would be to see us. It is not thought much of now for people to take a trip backward and forward. A material difference when you left here steam navigation and railway. Your Father's old friends was disappointed with him not writing home. He only promised to do so if he like it and got on but my father has a dollar he sent. I suppose it will be about the only heirloom he will have. It is about 15 years since he stopped active duty. He was 83years old on the 11 June. (She is referring to James Bell). He is still going about pretty fresh like for man of his years. My mother died on the 18 Dec 1892. (Her mother is Jean Ferrier Bell). My father was born 1815 and my mother was born Jan 1818.
John their oldest and only son was born 20 Nov 1844.
Elizabeth was born Jan 9th 1849
Jessie was born Nov 11th 1852
Maggie was born Oct 17 1854
Mary was born July 24 1859
There was other three but they were all dead before you went away.
Jessie was married Feb 22 1876 to a William Michie. They keep a dairy in the low flat and my father's house is upstairs. They have had nine of a family. They have buried a girl and two boys. They are sore troubled just now their eldest boy 21 years died on the 23rd April this year. He worked among the cows and helped to sell the milk. There was five year and one week from the first to the third. The others two was five and eight. Their second son is a gardener at Belmont Castle and their third son works the land at the Lockside. You remember it and then there are two girls and then comes a boy at the school and then the youngest a boy 3years past 3rd Nov. That is that family and then _____________ married a widower six years past the 12the Oct. He is a baker. He has a son and daughter. They are married so they are just themselves. They live in Dundee which is 14 miles away so we see each other pretty often and I thought of coming to Salt Lake after I lost my mother and Annie's folk were to see to me till I got a start but I could never make a start to go so I was married on the 10th Dec last year to a widower with three boys, all at school. We are getting on fine. I live about 30 yds from my father's house and my sister's so I am there every day two or three times. John and Maggie live with Father. John is a Tailor and Maggie is at the factory. She has been thirty years now at Mr. Don's unbroken service.
My father wishes me to ask if you have a farm of what your family gets to do. You are very lucky to have all your family with your for the fashion here is to get married as early as you can whither you are able or no and then there was Uncle Willie. You missed him he was your name Father I believe. He was born in 1813 and died on July 7, 1883 aged 70 years. I was at this burying ground on Sabbath last and was that his wife still alive Nannie Robb. All her family are married so she lives with a daughter just across the road from my father. Their eldest was Jane. She is about your age and then Annie and then John and Mary whom she now living with Maggie and Agnes and Robert. John died about 12 years ago I should think and Maggie was out in America and had a saloon and her husband died and she came and saw us all then one winter and went back and married another man. There was news last year she had drowned herself and Robert is a stone cutter in Detroit. You had maybe seen him when he was with Annie's folk. Robert is about the same age as myself. Their family and our family are about the same ages and then Aunt Jessie and Uncle John they were twins you remember. John is dead more than 20 years ago and Jessie died about 15 years ago. Jessie left one daughter, my name mother (Mary) and she is married to one of Uncle David's sons Willie two cousins. I was their best maid they had one girl she lived about six years with them so that is all of Aunt Jessie's family and Uncle John left a wife Tess Lamb and family of sons and daughters. (there are only one son and two daughters living). He doesn't live far from us but we never have any friend ship just speak in passing.
And then Uncle David was married to Charlotte Stirling. You remember them living at Kirrie Junction but Charlotte is dead before my mother but they help the gates a Methivern by Perth now for 21 years. He is still knocking about. He has to open and shut a gate on the railway there. His family is all away from him too but he has a housekeeper. That Willie is their eldest son about the same age as you too. Him and Mary Eadie lives in Forfar here. Uncle had a daughter Mary. She is married and lives in America somewhere. I think I will stop now this time write and tell me what you think of my letter. If there is anything I havent said, ask. That is all your Mother's folks I know of.
Uncle David has three sons and two daughters Willie and Mary and Maggie and she is not married but lives Forfar her at the factory in a room herself. He works at servicing machines. David married in Glasgow and Jack married here a porter at the station. He has one son about five years. He is about the same age as me. I thought Uncle David's family wasn't very clear hence the explanation. Robt Stirling died about two years ago and his wife Betty Stirling is one her death bed. Believe, Betty was Charlotte's sister. Willie Hunter will soon be 85. He is frail now but his is anxious to get the news about you all. He had his diamond wedding last year. I sent the account of it to Hannah Wyhte.
You remember Peter Robertson, he has had three wives and living on his money now the most comfortable of the lost of us. He is about 85 and his wife is about 50. He makes himself as young as possible.
I now bid you good by for this time. I am your cousin
