F.W. Chaffee and W.L. Burlingame
Purchased the Spencer lot on the South side of the square, will commence the erection of a large brick block. By the end of 1877 it was finished. The lower part was used for ordinary business purposes, but the 2nd floor became known as Burlingame & Chaffee's opera House and was popular for public gatherings for years.

MAY 1902

The committee appointed to draft resolutions on the demise of Brother F. W. Chaffee, submitted the following for the action of the Elks Lodge last night and the same were adopted:

WHEREAS: For the first time since Carthage Lodge No. 520 B.P.O.E was organized we are called upon to mourn the loss of an absent brother, who has answered to the call of the Grand Exalted Ruler of the Universe. In His wisdom, He who giveth and taketh away called from our ranks of Friday April 25, 1902, our beloved brother, Frank W. Chaffee. Brother Chaffee had only been a member of 520 for a few months and yet in that short space of time he exemplified the teachings of our order in his daily life, scattering flowers and sunshine in the pathway of suffering humanity.

RESOLVED, That in his death this lodge has lost one of its most zealous and faithful members, his family a devoted husband, an affectionate father and a wise counselor and the community an honest, courteous and upright citizen, his demeanor was so modest that those who did not know him most intimately could not appreciate
his nobility of character, his depth of affection and unswerving loyalty to his family, brothers and friends.

RESOLVED, That the heartfelt sympathy and
condolences of this lodge is hereby tendered to the family and friends of our deceased brother in their affliction and irreparable loss.

RESOLVED, That as a further mark of our sincere respect, the charter of this lodge be draped in mourning for a period of thirty days; that his name be duly enrolled as first upon the scroll of departed brothers; that these resolutions be spread upon the minutes of this lodge, that a copy thereof be sent to his family, and that copies be furnished the Press of this city for insertion.
