Ruth Brooks Drinker, 94,of Bedford, formerly of Concord and Carlisle, died Tuesday June 23, 2009 at Emerson Hospital, Concord, MA. She was the wife of the late Henry S. Drinker, her husband of 65 years.
Born in Concord Nov. 29, 1914, she was the daughter of Ruth Faxon Brooks and Arthur B. Brooks. She graduated from Concord Academy in 1931 and attended the Windsor School in 1931. After a year in Italy and at the Sorbonne in Paris, she attended Smith College for one year and graduated from Radcliffe College in 1937, Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa. She was also a graduate of the Harvard Radcliffe Management Training Program, class of 1940.
She taught at the Brearley School in New York City , the Agnes Irwin School in Wynnewood, PA and The Brooks School in Concord MA for 20 years.
In 1942, she married Henry S. Drinker Jr. and had two children, the late Ann Retherford, born 1942, and Henry Drinker, born 1946. She and her family lived in Concord for 33 years, Carlisle, and Carlton Willard Village.
Besides her long teaching career, she devoted a great deal of time and energy to various volunteer activities, including the Girl Scouts of Concord, Board of Trustees of Concord Academy for 11 years, Board of Trustees of The Brooks School for many years, co-founder and trustee of Nashoba Country Day school of Concord, MA, member of the Executive Committee of the Winsor Alumnae Association, president of the Concord Academy Alumnae Association and chairman of the Concord-Carlisle Adult Education Advisory Association for 12 years, and a volunteer at Emerson Hospital for 43 years.
During WW II, she started a Planned Parenthood office in Englewood, N.J. and established a daycare center to aid poor, working mothers in the same neighborhood.
Her awards include the Concord Academy Alumnae Joan Herman award for her work to provide education for children and adults, alike, and to improve the well-being of women and the poor, and a citation from the Concord-Carlisle Regional High School Committee for outstanding service and leadership on the Adult Education Committee.
Ruth was a prolific writer. She wrote for Yankee Magazine, coauthored The Story of the Concord Academy Houses, A Splendid Pine Grove, the history of Carlton Willard Village, and also wrote for The Villager, the newspaper for Carlton Willard.
She is survived by her brother, Dr. Peter Brooks, of Walla Walla, WA, her son, Dr. Henry Drinker and his wife Deborah of Holyoke, MA, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
In her words "Growing up in Concord meant walking a mile to school in every kind of weather, long skating trips on the river under the expert guidance of my father who could "read ice" by its sound and looks, skiing in barka boots and toe straps (even over homemade jumps), cross country excursions at all times of the year on foot or on skis, and learning to play tennis and golf."
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 25, 2009 at Carlton Willard Village, Bedford, MA at 2:00 PM.
