His brother, Simeon E. Ball, while serving with the 15th Massachusetts Infantry, died on 24 Jan 1862 of disease, age 18 years, 5 months and 30 days old.

Charles enlisted in Company G, Massachusetts 25th Infantry Regiment on 28 Jul 1862 and died in action before Fort Stedman on 20 Aug 1864 at Petersburg, VA.
