Presidente Della Comunità
(The President of the Community)

"The Jewish community numbered 535, in 1931. During the Holocaust, 12 Jews were sent to extermination camps. Another eight Jews were deported from Pisa. On August 1, 1944, the Nazis murdered Giuseppe Pardo Roques, who was a deputy major of Pisa, a prestigious Jewish philanthropist and president of the community. Eleven others seeking haven in Roque's house were murdered, as well as, including six Jews." from The Virtual Jewish History Tour of Pisa by Rebecca Weiner.

The plaque is written in Italian and for those who read Italian, this is verbatim:

Voi

Che vi accingete a sostare in preghiera
Sui sepolcri di persone care
Soffermatevi in raccoglimento
Presso questa pietra
Simbolica avellow per milioni di
Morti senza sepoltura

Tutti

Vittime innocenti della disumana
Perscuzione antiebraica

Ricordate

L'offesa all dignita dell'uomo
Pregate

English translation:

VOI (You plural)

As you prepare to pause in prayer
on the tombs (sepulchres) of dear ones (loved ones)
take a brief time to concentrate (meditate since the term is used when talking about a spiritual action such as
prayer)
by this stone
symbolic of the millions
of dead without a burial.

ALL innocent victims of inhumane
antisemitic persecution
Remember
those who already belonged
to the Jewish community of Pisa
ripped from their homes - deported - without return
to concentration camps
Exterminated in the crematoriums and gas chambers
or slayed here for betrayal

FOR THE PEACE OF THE DEAD
Do Not Forget
the barbaric acts perpetrated and that it will never be repeated
An Offense (a Violation) to the dignity of man (humankind)
Pray

(or Do Not Forget
the barbaric acts perpetrated
PRAY that an offense to the dignity of man does not repeat itself.)
